Instructor Biog – Jorge Buchanan

Jorge was born in Buenos Aires but raised in the middle of the Pampas and as a birthday present, Jorge’s Grandfather gave him a Shetland pony.  As Jorge was still too young at this point and the pony very naughty, the Shetland went to be schooled by Jorge’s cousin, Hector Guerrero, (who eventually went on to achieve a 7 goal handicap and play the Open Championship at Palermo) who lived nearby.

When he was seven, Jorge started hacking out on the notoriously naughty Shetland and then started to stick and ball between chukkers at Hector’s farm.  It didn’t take him long to join in with the farm polo and play 15 goals chukkers every day, sometimes alongside some of the Heguy brothers!

At 16 he  moved to a farm in Pilar and was able to play regularly with cousins and friends.  After finishing a Business Management course at University, Jorge started working summers in England and Ireland.

In the summer of 2010, he went on to do the HPA coaching course with Clare Tomlinson and David Morley.  Jorge has played tournaments in Argentina and Europe, two of them, he reports, were very memorable:  One was a 4 goal tournament at Guards Polo Club; The other was playing with his cousins at the MacDonough´s polo club!

Jorge really enjoys polo, being around horses and sharing his experience and likes to make sure that people who play with him have a lot of fun.  And he always wants to win.

When he’s not surrounded by horses and polo sticks you will find him fly fishing next to a river or a lake in Patagonia.

Jorge says “I am looking forward to joining Sussex Polo Club and having fun with great people who, like the Lents, are very passionate about polo!”
